Score with a clicker — eyes on the court

Press a button in your pocket after each point and CourtLive adds it, keeps the score right and reads it out loud. Works with a Flic button, Bluetooth remotes and keyboards. Setup takes about five minutes.

How it works

CourtLive listens for ordinary keyboard keys. Anything that connects to your phone or computer over Bluetooth and sends one of these keys becomes a scoring clicker — there is nothing to install on the CourtLive side.

ActionKeys
Point to player 1 (left)← ↑ Page Up A 1
Point to player 2 (right)→ ↓ Page Down D 2
Undo last point⌫ Backspace Delete U B .

Only one press is needed per point. CourtLive ignores accidental double-sends within a fraction of a second, so a jittery button won't score twice. The first clicker press also switches on Announce score, so you hear "15–love", "Deuce", "Game" after every point without looking at the screen.

Use Super Simple mode for clicker scoring. It records who won the point and nothing else — perfect when your hands and eyes are busy. Match length, sets and no-ad are chosen under Advanced settings when you create the match.

Supported hardware

If it shows up as a keyboard, it works. These are the ones we've tested and recommend.

Flic Button (Flic 2) Tested

A coin-sized Bluetooth button by Flic. One button does everything: push for player 1, double-push for player 2, hold to undo. Clips to a pocket or keyring, and the battery lasts up to three years. This is what we use.

Bluetooth presentation remote Works

The "clicker" used for slideshows. Most send Page Up / Page Down or arrow keys, which map straight to player 1 / player 2. Check the remote's key list before buying.

Bluetooth keyboard or number pad Works

Any keyboard: arrows, A / D, 1 / 2 and Backspace. A small number pad on the umpire chair is a cheap two-button scoreboard.

Camera-shutter / selfie remotes Usually not

The cheap ring and keychain shutters normally send a volume key or Enter, which never reaches a web page. Only buy one if it is documented to send arrow or Page keys.

Prefer no gadget at all? Score from your wrist with the CourtLive Apple Watch app, or say the point out loud with Voice mode (beta).

Set up a Flic 2 button

About five minutes, once. After that the Flic simply reconnects when you open a match.

Add the Flic to the phone you'll score on

Install the Flic app, press the button to wake it and follow the app to add it. Add it to the phone, not a Flic Hub — the button must talk directly to the device running CourtLive.

Switch the button to Flic Universal mode

In the Flic app, open the button and choose Flic Universal (the keyboard emulator). In this mode the Flic behaves like a Bluetooth keyboard, which is what lets it type keys into CourtLive. Accept the Bluetooth pairing prompt if your phone shows one.

Map the three presses to keys

Set the keyboard action for each press: Push → ← Left arrow (point to player 1), Double push → → Right arrow (point to player 2), Hold → U (undo). Backspace can't be chosen in the Flic app, which is why undo is the letter U.

Open your match and turn on Clicker mode

Start a match at app.courtlive.tv or in the CourtLive iPhone app. Choose Super Simple, then switch on Clicker mode. On iPhone and iPad this step is required — iOS only passes keyboard presses to a page while Clicker mode is on.

Press after every point

Push for the player on the left, double-push for the right, hold to take back a mistake. CourtLive scores it and announces the score. Share the match link and everyone follows live.

Using a remote or keyboard instead

On a computer (Mac, Windows, Chromebook): pair the remote or keyboard with the computer, open your match at app.courtlive.tv in Super Simple mode and press the keys. No switch to turn on.

On iPhone or iPad: pair the device in Settings → Bluetooth, open the match in Safari or the CourtLive app, choose Super Simple and switch on Clicker mode. Leave the match screen open — the presses only arrive while the scorer is in front.

On Android: pair in Bluetooth settings and open the match in Chrome. Switching on Clicker mode is harmless and helps on some phones.

Tips from the court

  • Keep the phone awake. A locked screen stops the presses. Put the phone on a tripod or the bench with auto-lock set to a few minutes, and plug in a power bank for long matches.
  • Turn the volume up. With Announce score on you never need to look down. If you'd rather hear nothing, switch Announce score off — the clicker still works.
  • Undo is one hold away. Pressed the wrong side? Hold the Flic (or press U) and the last point is removed — serve, game and set are recalculated automatically.
  • One button, one scorer. Score together with a second phone or an Apple Watch using the match code; the clicker only needs to be paired with one device.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing happens on iPhone. Make sure you're in Super Simple mode with Clicker mode switched on, and that the Flic is in Flic Universal mode and connected to this phone (Flic app shows it as connected). Tap anywhere on the scoring buttons once — iOS sometimes needs a touch before it hands keys to the page.
  • The on-screen keyboard pops up. You tapped a text field (player name or the share link). Tap the score area again and the keyboard goes away; Clicker mode never raises it by itself.
  • Points land on the wrong player. Player 1 is always the name on the left. Swap the mapping in the Flic app, or change which player serves first in Advanced settings.
  • Two points per press. Some remotes send a key both on press and release. CourtLive already filters repeats within a split second; if it still doubles, use a different key on the remote (arrows instead of Page keys, for instance).
  • It worked yesterday, not today. Bluetooth keyboards disconnect when idle. Press the Flic once to wake it, give it a few seconds, then try again. On iPhone, check Settings → Bluetooth shows it connected.

FAQ

Which clicker works with CourtLive?

Any Bluetooth device that sends keyboard keys: the Flic 2 button (in Flic Universal mode), Bluetooth presentation remotes that send Page Up/Page Down or arrow keys, and any Bluetooth keyboard or number pad. Camera-shutter remotes that only send a volume key do not work.

Do I need the CourtLive app, or does it work in the browser?

Both. On a computer, open app.courtlive.tv and press the keys. On iPhone and iPad, use Safari or the CourtLive app and switch on Clicker mode so the presses reach the page.

Why does nothing happen when I press my Flic on iPhone?

iPhone only passes hardware-keyboard presses to a web page while Clicker mode is on. Open your match, choose Super Simple and switch on Clicker mode. Also check the Flic is in Flic Universal mode and connected to the phone you are scoring on.

Can I undo a point with the clicker?

Yes. Hold the Flic (mapped to U), or press Backspace, Delete, U, B or the full-stop key on a keyboard or remote.

Does the score get announced?

Yes. The first clicker press turns on Announce score, so you hear the score after every point without looking at the phone. Switch it off with the Announce score toggle if you prefer silence.
